Introduction

Stand up paddle boarding is fun for all the family, regardless of experience. It’s a great activity for beginners as well as people who have tried it before. It's the perfect adventure activity for individuals, families, friends, colleagues or stag and hen parties and can be as demanding or relaxing as you want it to be as we can tailor your adventure to match your group’s time and budget.

Paddle boarding has a Hawaiian heritage and translates in Hawaiian to Ku Hoe He’e Nalu, meaning to stand and paddle to surf a wave. Its history dates back to the 1950’s when the surf instructors on Waikki Beach used to stand up and paddle out to the surf break using regular surf boards and a one bladed paddle.

Today the sport is incredibly popular and more accessible than ever. Find out more about our SUP sessions here at Dolygaer below!

SUP at Dolygaer

Stand up paddle boarding is fun, safe and something that everyone needs to try it at least once!

Here at Dolygaer we have a huge range of places to go stand up paddle boarding within easy travelling distance, meaning no matter how many times you get out there you can always see something new. On our doorstep we have the beautiful Pontsticill Reservoir, where you can experience some of the most relaxing and serene moments you could wish for on the water. With stunning views of the surrounding mountains and countryside, this really is a great way to see the local area.

You can also explore the beautiful 200 year old Brecon Beacon to Monmouthshire Canal by Paddle Board, a varied journey where you travel past aqueducts and fantastic views of the central Brecon Beacons mountains.

If it's your first time on a Paddle Board there is no better place to get your balance and your confidence up then the calm waters of Pontsticill Reservoir. The fact that it also offers some of the most beautiful views is simply a bonus!

All of our sessions begin with a full Health and Safety briefing and demonstration of the equipment so that everyone is happy to get on the water regardless of previous experience. Once on the water you will learn a range of key techniques such as how to launch safely, how to paddle kneeling down and standing up, alongside some more advanced paddling techniques that will help take you forwards, backwards and in circles.

All of this will be delivered with a smile from our passionate NGB qualified instructors.

For our more advanced or experienced Paddle Boarders we have the beautiful River Wye to explore alongside the Monmouthshire Canal, which is over 200 years old.

These sessions usually take a full day and involve instruction in some of the more advanced techniques that you will need to learn in order to manouvere your board across currents and around obstacles. They are huge fun and a fantastic means of exploring the local area.

For those looking for the ultimate group experience we definitely have the activity for you!

Our giant inflatable Stand Up Paddle Boards can accommodate up to ten adults at a time and are the perfect activity for large groups such as stag or hen dos or office groups. Your teamwork and collaboration will be tested as you maintain your balance and then learn to manouvere your craft across the reservoir without falling in!

Our Instructors

Our team of instructors are highly experienced and have all passed BCU qualifications in Paddle Boarding so you can be sure you are learning the latest and most up to date techniques and thinking while having fun on the water.

The team is led by Centre Manager Mike who has been paddleboarding for six years now, while Activities Manager Lisa also likes to get out on the water whenever she can. Our newest member of staff Neil is also a keen SUP instructor. Whoever teaches your group you will have fantastic fun as they tailor the session to your level and requirements.

Our Equipment

You wouldn't know it to look at them but all of our Stand Up Paddle Boards are fully inflatable! This makes them fantastic to learn on as they are very nimble and manourverable when it comes to practising your basic techniques but more importantly they are very forgiving if you should happen to fall off and/or in!

Alongside this we also have our Giant SUP board which is also inflatable and is capable of seating up to ten adults at one time.

In addition to your board we will provide you with a helmet, paddle and waterproof clothing.

FAQ

What do I need to wear to try Paddle Boarding?

A: There are no real requirements, though it’s a good idea to come in clothes that you don’t mind getting wet (Just in case!). A pair of old jogging bottoms and shoes is usually a good idea. It’s also best to bring a spare change of warm clothes to leave at the centre for once you’ve finished.

Q: Can I take part if I can’t swim ?

A: Yes, as long as you are relatively confident about being around water and near water. Whilst around or near the water, participants will always have a correctly fitted Buoyancy aid on. Please ensure that you let the Instructor know if you cannot swim, however.

Q: Will I get wet ?

A: You will probably get your shoes wet getting on and off the stand up paddle board and there is a small possibly of falling in, when practicing skills.  but other than that there is no reason you should get wet – unless you want to of course!

Q: What if I can't stand up?

A: With our expert tutors on hand to advise we are sure you will get the hang of it before too long. You can start by kneeling on the board to build your confidence until you feel ready to stand.
