A Few Things You Might Not Have Known About Canoeing

If you are looking for a fun water based activity then why not try your hand at canoeing? Picking up a paddle does not necessarily mean that you will need to suffer a great endurance test, it can be as energetic or peaceful as you like!

Canoeing goes way back and the oldest canoe is thought to be almost 10,000 years old! It was discovered in 1955 in the Netherlands and was made from a single Scotch pine log. Today’s canoes are made from moulded plastic and composites such as fiberglass. Originally used for hunting or even for military raids during the Second World War, the canoe has evolved over time and is now primarily used as a means of transport and fun! In today’s world we use canoes for racing, touring, white-water canoeing or simply just as a way to enjoy a leisurely outdoor activity.

At Parkwood Outdoors we are lucky to be able to offer some of the best spots for Canoeing in South Wales. Our centre is based just next to the beautiful Pontsticill Reservoir which is renowned for being a popular spot amongst water sports enthusiasts in the Brecon Beacons. We also take our visitors along to the picturesque Monmouthshire canal and for those looking for a more adventurous course, we visit our local rivers, the River Wye and River Usk.

This outdoor activity is extremely versatile, it can be a great to enjoy alone, with all the family or even as part of a team building day.

Here are a few top tips to remember when canoeing:

  • Always wear your life jacket. When canoeing you should always expect to get in the water at some point, either to swim or if you capsize!
  • Know your limits. Our British Canoe qualified instructors will be on hand to help you learn what type of course you are most suited to.
  • Invest in a dry bag. You can use a dry bag to keep your personal belongings with you and dry at the same time. This is great if you want to take pictures, bring along snacks or a change of clothes.
  • Protect yourself from the sun. Sunglasses, lip balm and sun cream are advisable on warm days as well as cold when the sun is shining.
